A Post Brexit Trade Deal with US Would Destroy NHS
July 15, 2018
We don’t want a special trade deal with (America First) Trump. Without doubt we will be totally screwed. He is a bully and would use the power of the US economy and its 330 million market to dominate our market of 65million.The NHS could not survive Trump’s demand to open it up to the American insurance medical and drug companies.
For years US multinationals have been demanding free access to the NHS and this has been supported by US trade negotiators( for example in TTPI talks ). Many Brexiteers within the Tory Party particularly Liam Fox have supported these demands as a way to reduce public spending on the NHS.
Since Trump came into office he has done everything to undermine multi-national free-trade agreements. He has already withdrawn from the Trans Pacific Partnership and scrapped the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership and is proposing to renegotiate Nafta. He is opposed to multinational agreements and wants to break them up. Rather than take on trade negotiations with strong multinational organisations like the EU and TPP which he cannot bully he wants to take on individual states which he can use the power of US economy to bully. This is why he supports Brexit and the breakup of the EU.
Any free trade agreement with Trumps “America First” will be a very one sided agreement in which we will be forced to accept all the demands of US. We will have lost the backing of the 500 million EU market.
Anyone who believes that our “special relationship” with US will prevent Trump from taking advantage of our weakness and screwing us probably also believes in the tooth fairy.
